Travelers passing through Miami International Airport can now see 13 large-scale public art installations drawn from The Underline, the 10-mile linear park beneath Miami-Dade's Metrorail. The exhibition, titled The Underline: A Canvas for the Community, is on view at MIA's Connecting Communities Wall.

Why it matters

For Miami-Dade residents who ride the Metrorail or walk The Underline, the airport show brings the corridor's art to a much wider audience, including visitors who may never have set foot on the park. It also puts a spotlight on how underused land beneath the tracks has been turned into shared public space.

The exhibition features 13 installations spaced along five miles of Metrorail, drawn from The Underline, a 10-mile linear park. The announcement does not break out how many works are historic commissions versus newer temporary pieces.

The players

The Underline

A 10-mile linear park built beneath Miami-Dade's Metrorail that reimagined underused land as public space for art and recreation.

Miami-Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works

The county agency that co-produces The Underline alongside the cultural affairs office.

Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs

The county office whose Art in Public Places program co-produces The Underline and supports its permanent works.

The details

The show is installed at MIA's Connecting Communities Wall and is titled The Underline: A Canvas for the Community. It mixes historic commissions with newer temporary works by artists from local, national and international backgrounds. The Underline is a collaboration between Miami-Dade County's Department of Transportation and Public Works and the Department of Cultural Affairs' Art in Public Places program, and its permanent pieces belong to the county's Art in Public Places collection, supported by the Art in Public Places Trust, the Department of Cultural Affairs, the Cultural Affairs Council and the Mayor and Board of County Commissioners.

Timeline

Beyond the 305

The show extends Miami-Dade's Art in Public Places collection, which is the same county program that funds permanent works along The Underline. Moving these pieces into MIA's terminal carries that public-art model from the trail into one of the county's busiest transit spaces.

If you fly through MIA before May 2, 2027, you can see a slice of The Underline's art without leaving the terminal. It is also a chance to see how the county's public-art works look outside the park setting.

The takeaway

The airport show turns a transit-and-trail project into something travelers can experience in passing, and it runs through May 2, 2027. Check the Connecting Communities Wall on your next trip through MIA, and watch for how the county keeps adding works to its public collection.

What happens next

The exhibition remains on view at MIA's Connecting Communities Wall until it closes on May 2, 2027.
